This is a 6 week SOW comprised of 18 PowerPoint lessons (roughly 100 minutes per lesson). Contains two assessment lessons/opportunities.
It teaches narrative writing (aimed at KS3-KS4) and uses the AQA Telling Tales Short Story Anthology to understand key components of narrative writing ahead of the AQA Language GCSE. If you do not have anthologies from AQA, I have found that all stories used in these lessons can be located on genius.com. Stories are read alongside the lessons to aid understanding of narrative writing as well as develop vocab/punctuation etc.
SOW contains many independent/paired/group tasks, peer assessment opportunities, annotated exemplar pieces of narrative writing alongside the short stories and delves into many topics. Topics addressed include:
Narrative structure
Narrative hooks
Narrative voice/perspective (including reliable/unreliable narrators)
Figurative Language
Characterisation
Describing Setting
‘Show, Don’t Tell’
Foreboding/Foreshadowing
Tone, Mood & Atmosphere
Symbolism
Metanarratives
Plot Twists
Suspense/Tension
Sentence Structures (and isolated sentences)
Narrative Endings & Cliffhangers
The SOW also contains punctuation and vocab ‘bites’ which teach varying applicable new vocab and how to use particular punctuation marks for students to embed within their next piece of writing.
